THE RETURN

Published October 5, 2025

Hello! It’s been a little bit. Honestly way too early considering what happened early in September. I was expecting to be away from the project for months. But in reality, Toby Fox himself shot me with a rainbow laser beam (indirectly) and validated my existence as a fangame creator.

With that, DELTATRAVELER returned.

And I’m here to tell you that so much has gone down since the UNDERTALE 10th Anniversary Livestream that it honestly feels like I’m working on a whole new project. So many new ideas, bringing on several new people to the team, and a whole new workflow has revitalized the project in a way that has never been done before.

But you probably don’t need me to ramble about how things used to be. What’s going on now?

The Refresh Update

A LOT has changed with the plans for this update since both reducing scope for future content and seeing the UNDERTALE 10th Anniversary Livestream. We were inspired to do a lot more from the stream, and we can also afford to do more with expanding old sections now that we don't have a 7th section with a scary 3rd dimension.

In short, the Refresh Update is pretty much a soft-reboot now.

What does that mean? The most important thing to know about this is that Section 1 and 3 will be seeing complete overhauls. Section 1 will have a brand new "2nd half" that deviates heavily from the Undertale-locked original, and Section 3 will be receiving a whole makeover utilizing an idea I had last year for a GG!UNDERFELL reboot (let's call it VB!UNDERFELL for now...). I won't go into specifics for now, but with what we've been coming up for them, I think they'll end up being very special. The only thing I can really confirm is that Section 1 will utilize elements of Undertale Yellow's Dark Ruins.

This does mean that SAVE's from what we'll be dubbing the "Classic" versions of DELTATRAVELER won't be able to transfer over to the new versions. We might retain some level of transfer, like having old settings transfer from the old version, but classic SAVE files just flat out won't be compatible with the new versions.

So from that, I think a new versioning system is in order! The old versions will still be retained, but as "DELTATRAVELER Classic" versions. What we've decided on for now is starting versioning with rw1.0.0 with the first release of this new rebooted DELTATRAVELER. Then, when the final section releases and the game is finally "finished," we'll probably wrap back around and release it as v1.0.0.

Think of rw1.0.0 as the start of the reboot "prerelease" era, where new sections are still released episodically. Then it becomes v1.0.0 as when the game is properly finished from start to end. It's kinda like Minecraft pre-release versions in a way.

Also, when I announced my short-lived break from the project, you might've been aware of one thing that I felt needed to happen, which was workflow changes. This has happened, and was the first thing I did when I returned. I've even organized and hosted two whole team meetings from then to now, which NEVER happened in the past. I'm not the only one doing things anymore, and people feel encouraged to help with the game and give their own input!!!

Needless to say, I think the project is in a great spot right now.

Release Schedule...?

Regarding when this stuff will come out, I can't say for sure. We're essentially making a new section with the new stuff for Section 1, and Section 3 is getting a full on remake. Section 2 isn't getting nearly as many radical changes I think, but we still wanna add something new to it that's fairly substantial. What that may be, I don't know yet, but we'll see.

Regardless, I'm not sure if the Refresh Update will be a multi-part process or not. Our current understanding of it is that we are either going to:

  1. Release it all at once with Sections 1-3 included, as just rw1.0.0.
  2. Release it in two parts: rw1.0.0 with just Sections 1 & 2, then rw1.1.0 with Section 3 added.

Though for us to consider actually doing the 2nd option, we'd have to be some ways into making the new Section 3 and we'd have to know everything we want to do with the section.

So, I think, just be patient. I can see this being a 12-18 month endeavor, but it could take longer if something unexpected happens, or if I decide to take a break from the game anyway.

I know it sucks that the game is still going to remain in its three part state for even longer, but I feel like it's going to be worth it for something that I feel will be truly special. A fangame that explores the worlds it has in interesting ways, and has its own interesting story and lore.

I will be going behind the wall,

And I anticipate the day that I can show you what we find.

All I ask for is patience and trust.

Thank you. Hope to see you soon. <3
